2011 Highlights



NanoCareer Day
Forty schools participated in CNSE’s quarterly NanoCareer Day programs, representing 1,200 students and 80 teachers from throughout New York State.

NanoHigh
A first-of-its-kind initiative developed jointly by CNSE and the City School District of Albany, the groundbreaking “NanoHigh” program graduated 19 Albany High School students, bringing the total to nearly 80 since its implementation four years ago.

CNSE and Girls Inc. Eureka!® Partnership
Addressing the critical national need to expand the number of young women who pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), CNSE and Girls Inc. announced that they intend to partner to establish New York’s only Girls Inc. Eureka!® program – the nation’s first to encourage girls to explore the growing educational and workforce opportunities in nanotechnology.

Girls Inc. Nano Summit
CNSE hosted more than 150 girls and educators from the City School District of Albany for the first-ever Girls Inc. Nano Summit, which included a featured presentation, CNSE tours and nanotechnology workshops. 

‘Nanotechnology and Nature’ at the Pine Bush Preserve
Nearly 100 middle-school students from three Capital Region schools experienced the convergence of “Nanotechnology and Nature” during an educational outreach program presented by CNSE at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Discovery Center.

STEP Statewide Student Conference
Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, CNSE Senior Vice President, Chief Executive Officer and Professor of Nanoscience, discussed the emerging science of nanotechnology before a crowd of more than 550 people during the 13th Annual STEP Statewide Student Conference in Albany.

NanoDays at the Children’s Museum of Science and Technology
CNSE faculty and staff partnered with the Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CMOST) in Troy during NanoDays 2011. The program included presentations, experiments and demonstrations throughout the day that explored a variety of topics and concepts in nanotechnology.

NanoExplorations: Girl Scouts Go Nano!
Girl Scouts from throughout the region experienced the high-tech workplace of the future – and received the nation’s first Girl Scout patch for nanotechnology – at CNSE’s $12 billion Albany NanoTech Complex, participating in hands-on activities to highlight the exciting advances enabled by nanotechnology research and development.

Science and Health Discovery Night
CNSE was a featured exhibitor at the 2011 Science and Health Discovery Night held by the Shenendehowa Central School District, which was designed to get students excited about future careers in STEM fields. More than 1,500 families attended the event.

CMOST NanoCamp
CNSE partnered with CMOST to present two week-long summer NanoCamp programs as part of CMOST’s “Girls in Science and Technology” program. Participants ranged in age from 11 to14 years old and spent time both at CMOST and CNSE, where they participated in hands-on nanotechnology-related activities.

Tech Valley Summer Camp
CNSE hosted more than 20 middle-school students as part of the Capital Region BOCES and Questar III Tech Valley Summer Camp. The students spent two days touring CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex and taking part in hands-on nanotechnology activities.

Utica City School District Educator Program
CNSE hosted more than 100 educators from the Utica City School District (UCSD) as part of the UCSD Educator Program, providing a firsthand look at the growing number of educational and career opportunities in the emerging field of nanotechnology.
